In our opinion, an influencer is someone who has respect from their peers in a particular subject or field. This usually means that they have a large following on social media platforms and that their posts (updates that they publish on the social media platforms) are seen by people interested in the topics posted about. This audience tend to react well to these posts, many of them taking action (being influenced) as a result.
Quite often, influencers have a background that includes a high level of achievement in a particular subject, sport or action. Some highly regarded influencers are singers, actors and models.
Becoming an Influencer
Becoming an influencer often requires prior media attention that is based on previous actions or achievements. For example, a singer that has sold many albums, a sports personality that has impacted their sport in some way, or a personality that has media attention and a large following because of an appearance on a reality television programme.
However, it is not impossible to become an influencer if you don’t have the same mass media appeal as a Premier League footballer. Influencers are from many backgrounds. Lets imagine you are a great cook. You experiment with different flavours and techniques. The better you get, the more chance there is that people will be very interested in what you are doing.
By publishing articles with pictures, or even video snippets, you could get a large number of fans. This person is not only providing their followers with new information about cooking, but they are also able to influence choices, for example the types of food consumed and the cookware, utensils and food preparation equipment used. This level of influence may have a value to a company promoting a new range of pans, a food processor or a new range of organic spices.
